ABOUT US

THE FARM

Northern Lights Fruit & Vegetable Co. is located 85 km northwest of Peace River.   We are stewards of 320 acres of land and the majority of the area is wooded with the Whitemud River running through the southern quarter.  There are several large clearings and a number of oxbows.  We plan to maintain much of the land as a natural and diverse ecosystem with walking trails using established paths around and across the land while continuing to participate in local agro activities such as the grazing of our neighbour’s cattle.  There are approximately 10 acres of cleared land that will be used for cultivation.  Vegetable production is our main focus, but we also developing an orchard. We have planted black currants, saskatoons, raspberries, plum trees and apple trees. Hopefully we will be able to start sharing these fruits with you in 2022.   We are also cultivating asparagus, garlic and varieties of herbs.  Our crops are started from seed in our own greenhouse and they are grown in a natural and sustainable fashion.  Sustainable and natural production optimizes the use of natural biological controls, companion planting, maintaining soil fertility and moisture with the use of cover crops as well as green manure and most importantly, crop rotations.  Diversity is also important and we look forward to building partnerships with local beekeepers and herbalists to enhance the diversity of our farm.

DAN & LOUISE

Louise & Dan moved to the Peace country from Edmonton in April 2016.

Louise completed a BSc Agriculture with a major in Crop Science from the University of Alberta in May 2016.  Her education has provided her with a broad range of knowledge including familiarity with small business management, animal science, botany, rangeland management, entomology, plant diseases, wildlife identification, soil classification and fertility, environmental ecology, and cropping systems.  She is now entering the practical phase of her education where the task is to assimilate all this knowledge and apply it to the sustainable production of vegetable and fruit crops in a northern region.  This will be an exciting new chapter of Louise’s life as she returns to her rural roots. Louise is an aspiring artist working with both water colours and pencil sketching.

Dan is a city boy and has never had a home in a town smaller than 50,000 people.  He is a certified spiritual care practitioner and offers his services in the Peace country through Northern Lights Spiritual Health & Wellness.  He has very little knowledge or experience when it comes to farming, but he is a life-long learner and enjoys the peace and solitude, as well as, the challenges of living here.  Dan is an aspiring life model with over 70 hours of work to his credit.
